Leadership Development

Leadership development for uncertain times

Fosgail leadership development supports managers, directors, deans, and emerging leaders in libraries and education who want to grow in self-awareness, resilience, and effectiveness without sacrificing their wellbeing. Our programs focus on the whole person—values, context, skills, and sustainability—rather than just adding more leadership “tips” to an already full plate.

What we focus on together

Across individual and cohort offerings, leadership development with Fosgail often explores themes like:

  • Understanding your leadership, communication, and conflict styles
  • Building and maintaining trust with staff, peers, faculty, and boards
  • Navigating transitions in roles, teams, or organizational direction
  • Setting and holding healthy boundaries to reduce burnout
  • Writing and implementing a personal leadership development plan

The aim is to help you lead in ways that are aligned with your values, grounded in your context, and sustainable over time.

One-on-one leadership development coaching

For managers, directors, and C-suite leaders who want to focus specifically on leadership growth, Fosgail offers structured coaching engagements that integrate assessment tools such as CliftonStrengths for Leaders and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI).

Over the course of several months, you will:

  • Clarify your leadership strengths, patterns, and growth edges using assessment results
  • Set a small number of meaningful leadership goals
  • Use regular one-to-one coaching sessions to reflect on your leadership in real situations and experiment with new approaches
  • Pause near the end of the engagement to reflect on what has shifted and decide what comes next

These engagements build on Fosgail’s executive coaching practice but with a specific focus on leadership development goals and assessment-informed insight.

Leadership development cohorts

Fosgail leadership development cohorts blend executive coaching, mentoring, and peer support in small groups, creating space for leaders to learn with and from one another.

Cohort programs typically:

  • Bring together 4-6 participants for a series of sessions over several months
  • Explore leadership styles, communication, conflict, trust-building, managing transitions, and personal leadership planning
  • Are co-facilitated by an accredited executive coach and an experienced mentor with deep experience in libraries and theological education
  • Include ongoing access to a private cohort space and inter-cohort networking area within the Fosgail Community

Cohorts are offered when there is sufficient interest, which helps ensure that each group is small, focused, and ready to engage.

Our approach to leadership development

Leadership development at Fosgail is grounded in Attendant Leadership and the Fosgail Mindset, emphasizing relationality, reflection, and sustainable practice. We pay close attention to how your leadership is shaped by your particular role, institution, and community, and we invite you to experiment with changes that are realistic in your context.

Rather than trying to turn you into a different kind of leader, we work with you to deepen your self-knowledge, expand your options, and support leadership that is both courageous and grounded.

Is Fosgail leadership development a good fit?

Our leadership development offerings may be a good fit if:

  • You hold formal or informal leadership responsibility in a library, theological school, or higher-education context.
  • You want space to reflect honestly on your leadership, receive thoughtful feedback, and try new approaches.
  • You value learning in relationship—with a coach, mentor, or small cohort of peers.

If you are looking for a quick, one-time leadership workshop without follow-up, a different offering may be a better fit, and we can help you think about other options.

What clients say

The cohort experience enabled me to make meaningful connections between who I am and the work I am called to in a theological library. It equipped me to better understand myself and the ways in which leadership principles apply to my work. I also enjoyed the chance to connect with mentors and other emerging leaders in our field. The one-on-one coaching sessions were insightful and produced significant results in my personal and professional life. I would highly recommend the cohort!
